Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more.Tao couldn't go home until he found the rabbit.The other promblem is he was born with a bad foot.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict.I think his going to find the rabbit where he left it and I think when he grows up his going to heal from his leg.

Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter?One important event was when Tao entered the cave where only the Chosen Ones could enter to make cave paintings and the other one is when Tao see's again the little wolf and helps the wolf by taking out the splinter that was stuck in his jaw.

Chapter 3
1. What do Tao and Ram learn to do together?Both of them learn to hunt.

2.What decision does Tao tell Volt?He tells him that why they don't have a wolf dog to help them hunt.

3.Look at Tao's decisions and actions from Volt's perspective. Pretend you are Volt. Write a first person paragraph explaining
how you feel.If I was Volt I would be angry at him becausethe first time he left the rabbit in the meadow.I would also not be that mad because he has a broken leg.

Tao's mother would fight and cry when the men tried to take Tao from her and leave him so the hyenas can eat him.She was young when she had Tao.She was really nice and pretty.She saw things pretty like the clouds.

Chapter 5
1. Which two animals does Tao try to draw?The first animal was a horse and then it was a wolf dog.
2. Which is easier for him and why?The wolf dog was easy because he was looking at Ram.

Chapter 6
1. Graybeard realizes that Tao has broken two taboos of his clan. What are they?He hunts with Ram and he was in the forbidden land.
2. Which taboo doesn't he know about yet?He doesn't know that Tao was painting inside the cave.
3. Graybeard describes Volt differently than we have. What aspects of Volt's character is Graybeard acknowledging?That Volt is a good man but often he dreams of spirits and demons.

Chapter 7
Write your reaction to the last paragraph in the chapter. Do you agree or disagree with Graybeard? Is what he says true for those times, but not now? Or, is the reverse true: was it not true then, but true now?My reaction is that Graybeard was really angry at Tao.I agree with Graybeard because Tao knows that drawing inside caves is taboo.I think it was true for those times because in that time they believed in evil spirits.

Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways.
The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. Imagine a similar situation today.
What situation did you imagine?I imagined that if a mom and dad want to be in the army.

In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's rules? Give your opinion.I think he should follow society's rule because then their children won't see their parents.

Chapter 9
Why do you think Graybeard changed his mind?I think Graybeard changed his mind because he felt bad for Tao because he knew that Tao really wanted to draw and he knew he was never going to be a chosen one.
What does this tell you about his character?It tells that Graybeard is flexible.

Chapter 10
1. What are the "mountains-that-walk"?"Mountains-that-walk" are cows.
2. What almost happened to Tao?Tao almost got killed by a cow but then Ram chased her calf and the cow chased Ram and forgot about Tao.

Chapter 11
Do you think Graybeard is a good teacher? Why?I think Graybeard is a good teacher because his a chosen one so that means that he knows what his teaching.
Would you like to have been taught a skill by him? Why?Yes,I would like to learn from him how to draw becuase he is really good at drawing animals.

Chapter 12
1. Name some of the ingredients used to make paint. Which surprised you most?He needed some fish oil,animal fat,blood,duck eggs,and honey.The fish oil surprised me the most.
2. Why is Tao afraid at the end of the chapter?Tao was afraid for Graybeard because he was old and he needed to walk a lot to each clan.

Chapter 13
1. Even if Ram had succeeded in hunting the deer, do you think it was a good idea of Tao's to "show off" his dog's ability to hunt? Explain.I think it is a good because if Ram had succeeded on hunting the deer Volt and the hunters would probably understand that wolf dogs are not evil.
2. Predict what will happen next. If you've read ahead, invent an alternate scene.I predict that the other clan is going to find Ram.

Chapter 14
1. Why does Tao cross the river?He heard a noise and he thought it was Ram.
2. What decision does Graybeard reach?Graybeard tells the Mountain People to release Ram.

Chapter 15
What problem does Tao have by the end of the chapter?When Tao went into the wrong direction he ran back but then a drop of water landed in his lamp and then he got lost in the dark.

Chapter 18
Why does Tao feel he needs to go to the Mountain People?Tao feels that he needs to go to the mountain people because so he could prove himself again to the Mountain People.
